1.  Limit your Layers, 3 is best

2.  Know your Body Type:  Are you an Apple, Pear, Ruler, Inverted Triangle or Hourglass.  Understanding your body type helps with the most flattering layering possibilities.  I suggest layer with caution when it comes to bulky items,  Below I would of removed the denim shirt.

Layering Clothing is fun, looks very chic and stylish and fundamentally can keep you warm this Fall.  Good Luck and remember the tips and work with your tool box!!

I just discovered the best place to stay in Downtown Phoenix, plus extracurricular activities!!!

Thanks to Hotels.com  the Clarendon popped up as I was searching for a hotel in Phoenix.   My visit specifically was  to see the Gianfranco Ferre Exhibit at the Phoenix Museum of Art.FullSizeRender (12)

The Clarendon surpassed my expectations!!!! IMG_0099

At the special rate of $85.00 per night I decided to book it . The vibe was swank with a comfortable casual feel.  I have stayed at “Swank” in Palm Springs, LA , Chicago and New York, but the Clarendon had a friendly stylish vibe and for a first impression that says “welcome” to me.

As I was handed my key and headed to my room, I was asked if I needed any snacks complimentary – whatever I wanted– What? are you kidding me?  Twix and Cheetos were on the list, Woo hoo!!!  Yes please!  Why not I am on Vacation!!!

Perk #1003My room was spacious, quiet, and the decor was pleasantly modern.  Comfortable, clean and functional. Classical music was dialed in as I entered- NiceIMG_0097

The property had a heated pool convenient  if you visit in the winter , and a huge hot tub. Lots of properties have pools and hot tubs but the design, layout and coolness of the Clarendon’s is what separates them from the average norm! Perk #2007

Perk #3  Rooftop Garden and Bar.FullSizeRender (13)  Great view, Great lounge pads and on Thurs, Fri Jazz complimentary.  I didn’t even have to leave my hotel to listen to good music- Awesome.

Perk #4  Complimentary Wine from 5-6 nightly.  Unfortunately I did not make it in time for “Happy Hour” but I did find a spot at their comfy hotel bar later on and enjoyed a Martini while talking to Falyn, the lovely bartender.  She was not only pleasant to talk to but was a wealth of information on the cool spots to go to.falyn

Falyn’s pics which I will check out next visit : Phoenix Flea Market on Saturdays, Crescent Ballroom, Valley Bar, Hanny’s ( Martini Bar)

I did visit her suggestion Lux CafeFullSizeRender (7)

Lux Cafe was a perfect spot for my 4pm Espresso and I did cave at the temptation of baked goodies.  Great for people watching as well as delicious coffee and treats.

Ready for Jazz!!  The trio was great and to have this little luxury at the push of 4 flights up in the elevator you couldn’t ask for anything better-FullSizeRender (10)

Perk #5  The Clarendon has an awesome restaurant with gourmet food!!   I am so particular  where I eat and what I eat.   Again a luxury I didn’t have to step out of the property to obtain my high standards of dining.  Plus I can’t reiterate the casual vibe and comfort level overall.  I had the Shrimp Sofrito with Garlic Manchego Bread and it was absolutely delicious!shrimp sofritos

Perk #6  If you are a dog lover like me, it is so nice to see dogs welcome at your hotel. Indeed I did!FullSizeRender (9)

Perk #7 Breakfast complimentary in the dining room, and made to order off the menu.   I am sure we have all had the complimentary breakfast at Quality Suites and it passes but at the Clarendon you are enjoying Lux Coffee (local coffee) to start your morning followed by whatever you choose of the menu.  Local ingredients, organic ingredients  result in a great food.  I had Chilaquiles with over easy eggs and it was yummy!  I couldn’t wait till the next  morning!!

IMG_0128 (1)

As my tummy was happy and quite content I ventured off to the Phoenix Museum to view the GianFranco Ferre Exhibit ” The White Shirt According to me”.  This exhibit was extraordinary.  Phoenix being the only museum in North America to show this, how lucky was I, only 1.5 hours  from Tucson where I live.  The Installation was the exact installation as in Milan and Florence the only two locations to show the exhibit.FullSizeRender (2)Gianfranco Ferre was an Architect before Designer and was hugely popular in the 80’s.  The 24 White shirts exhibited all had a story behind them and were just eye candy by themselves.FullSizeRender (5)FullSizeRender (4)FullSizeRender (3)  The museum also presented  a small collection of his Couture pieces.  My Favorite was the black dress with red roses!FullSizeRender (6)

An interesting current exhibit   was the Zodiac collection . Renowned Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei (b. 1957) took as his inspiration for his twelve Chinese zodiac bronze sculptures from those that once graced the Qing dynasty fountain, in an eighteenth-century imperial retreat outside Beijing. Like other ornate objects, the original pieces were looted by the British and French troops in the Second Opium War in 1860. Viewed as a symbol of “cultural theft”, Weiwei re-created the gold-plated sculptures in 2010 as a subversive commentary on the nature of looting and repatriation.FullSizeRender (8)

Back at the Hotel!  Breakfast # 2 consisted of flapjacks and eggs with local sausage and roasted potatoes.  A sophisticated version of the Grand Slam breakfast we all know at Denny’s!  The flapjacks were the best pancakes I have ever tasted.IMG_0194

Needing a little exercise to burn off my sinful breakfast, I hopped on a cool bike that was complimentary Perk #8012clarendon For two hours I had fun exploring the neighborhoods specifically the Willo and Encanto districts.  Beautiful homes, bungalows, landscaping and the retro mid century era all was visible to me on a quiet Sunday morning.IMG_0210 (1)

IMG_0218IMG_0222I really felt free, peaceful and totally happy!!! Perk #9 that wasn’t in the brochure.

It is amazing what a little get away can do for your spirits and well being.  The Clarendon and Phoenix museum did just that for me!!!

Vegas: Part One: Top Ten things that made me Smile

After spending 72 hours in Sin City009 I have concluded a few thoughts.  There are good aspects, bad and most definitely ugly. This blog is all about the good, Part 2 in the near future will reveal what I didn’t love so much.

I was fortunate to travel with a friend who was so easy to get along with  and we just seemed to be in sync the whole trip.  That was a blessing!IMG_1358

The last time I was in Vegas was approximately 15 years ago and this trip was about finding the cool spots under the categories of dining, shopping, sightseeing, gaming.  I did indeed find some, but I know more research is needed!!! At least I am off to a good start.

Vegas Top Ten  that made me Smile and I highly recommend

1.  The Signature Hotel.  A boutique hotel, separate from the Parent MGM Grand Hotel  which was all suites and  is non- gaming.   Luxurious retreat  many with balconies & all with kitchenettes & spa tubs.signature hotel  I stayed here and loved the feel of it.  Gated, private, and I didn’t get lost finding the elevator as opposed when you stay in a Casino Hotel.

2.  Mandarin Hotel.  Another non- gaming hotel that is absolutely gorgeous!  Quite, Zen and beautifully decorated.  This was our elevator exit eye candy on the 23rd floor! ddd  The 23rd floor offers a magnificent view, and the bar looked choice.ccc - Copy  I was drooling watching people enjoy their cocktails!eee  A visit to the public restroom was a treat also.  The room was infused with Musk and just the right amount to please the senses. aaa - Copy I also treated myself to lunch one day  at Twist by Pierre Gagnaire, very expensive but worth it.las-vegas-restaurant-twist-4  I devoured my Miso Black Cod, with Marinated Daikon Radish and Sauteed Spinach.IMG_1390  A crisp Sauvignon Blanc washed it all down.  And I couldn’t resist the Bread and Dipping Sauces.  I love the good life!

3.  Aria Resort and Casino. I only visited the lobby one evening and I was impressed immediately  with an aura of minimalism, Sophistication and chic. bbbb Located in  the heart of both the Las Vegas Strip and the incredible City Center urban complex. It sports a design that spans modern architecture, which rich touches of decor and art.  I felt confident a Chihuly sculpture spanned the lobby.aaaa - Copy  I took a peek inside the restaurant Sage and dining there is on my to do list next visit.cccc

4. The Shops at Crystals. 100 Located next Aria in the City Center.  Designer heaven.  I love to  look at these shops for their  exquisite beauty and design, the gorgeous merchandise, and most of all  inspiration and over the top eccentricity.  I was surprised Chanel and Ferragamo weren’t invited to the party!

5. The Bellagio Hotel Casino.  After dining at Todd English Olives Restaurant located in the Bellagio, Madeleine and I decided to try our luck playing Black Jack. We liked the vibe, and felt comfortable in the Casino.Blackjack_board We found a $15.00 minimum table and a gentleman sitting at the horseshoe position who knew how to play.  This is so important because if you sit down at a table with a rookie at the end spot they could mess up the whole table if they take hits or holds on cards that could benefit the dealer and then everyone looses.  We were lucky charms for the table and had so much fun playing with our new fast friend ” The Australian Well Dressed Gentleman ”  In 30 minutes Madeleine and I turned $50.00 into $358.00  We walked away winners!!!!!

5.5 . The Bellagio Fountains.  WOW!!!!!!  WE have all watched the scene in Oceans Eleven as the Magnificent 7 gloat with their successful heist as they watch these fountains.  Well let me tell you it is so much  better live and absolutely spectacular to view in person.  I thought it was better than any fireworks display I have seen.   I loved it.vegas_bellagio

6. Vegas at Night.  Lights, Lights and more Lights.bb - Copy  You can’t help but get a feel of excitement taking it all in when the sun sets and the lights take over the strip. Casinos,  Bill boards, buildings, palm trees, stores everything is lit up!cc - Copy  Even the cars driving on the strip participate in the illumination.022dd  I enjoyed the energy the night “lights” gave me.018

7 Zara.  I love this store and it was located at Fashion Show Mall. Woo Hoo!!!  Zara is considered fast fashion- great style and design at a great price.  If you are not sure what is in style these days just go to Zara.com and you will find out.  Madeleine and I both found some great pieces to compliment our fall wardrobe.  I bought cigarette ripped jeans, cigarette jeans and two thick, wooly infinity scarves.013 014Madeleine bought a grey cotton Jumpsuit, and a scarf as well.037

8. Buffalo Exchange.  No trip is complete without a Buffalo Exchange outing if the city has one. The excitement of what you may find is always exhilarating to me.  Located downtown, we took the city bus and found our way to their new location.  Did we score???  Of course.  Madeleine found great jeans and a vintage Coach bag, simple and gorgeous leather.bbbbb - Copyccccc  I found an amazing crochet dress, and a Black little cutout tank.  I guess I was in a peekaboo mood!!!!015012

9. Carson Kitchen 124 South Sixth Street.FullSizeRender (14)  OMG what we stumbled upon has left me hungry and wanting more.  As we were navigating to find Buffalo Exchange in a depressing part of downtown we both noticed some cool signage in a small window front.  We peered closer and realized a restaurant was hiding behind the window, so hard to see with the bright glare.  We walked in and surrendered immeadealtely.  Great decor with an industrial vibe, delicious aromas coming from the kitchen and all organic!IMG_0884

We sat down at the bar and chowed and toasted and cheered to our great find. We enjoyed a Beet Salad and Rabbit Ragu with Spaghetti Squash.FullSizeRender (15)IMG_1364  It was a local hangout and packed by the time we left.  I will always come back here when I visit Vegas.

10.  Lotus of Siam.  My husband and I dined here 15 years ago and  our meals were out of this world , along with exceptional service.  I never forgot that wonderful experience so I wanted to return and  bring my friend to try it again.  It did not disappoint!20120523-207684-lotusofsiam-redchilidip

You don’t have to be a food insider in Las Vegas to know about Lotus of Siam. Despite its unlikely location in a non-descript strip mall, the outstanding and authentic food at Lotus of Siam has garnered attention from countless national media outlets, including the title of Best Thai Restaurant in the United States from the late Gourmet magazine.

72 Hours and our trip was packed. Looking forward to the next trip and taking more in– So much more to do and see!!!!!  Next blog: Part 2 The other side of Vegas from my point of view.

Plenty of Reasons to Travel Alone to Chicago

083I Love Chicago and I decided to treat myself to a solo trip so I could do whatever I wanted to do, whenever and for ever how long! I also wanted the challenge of navigating the city by myself and be self sufficient since I have the luxury of my husband to always figure out maps, subways, flight status, have a dining companion ect.  I wanted to push myself out of my comfort zone and see what would happen.

I did just fine and even returned home with a little more confidence!

Here are some of the highlights:

Before we get going I was proud I packed a carry on and limited shoes! Stuart Weitzman Laser Cut Black Boots, Paul Green Baseball Shoe , Calvin Klein Black Patent Mid Heel Pump, Cole Haan Track shoes, Franco Sarto Olive Boots(shown with Pink Coat below).002

Day 1

I could of taken a $60.00 taxi into the city but I decided to be brave and save money and go underground and take the  train(orange line)  and transfer to the red line to get to my hotel the Talbot.  Success ! Total cost $3.50 I really do love public transportation.

The Talbot Hotel is a beautiful little boutique hotel located in the Gold Coast  district. 038 Great neighborhood with lots of  shopping, cafes, restaurants and good people watching. 021 On a side note Molton Brown amenities were lined up like little soldiers in the bathroom for me!   Ahhh luxury.

First stop Barney’s New York, 3 minutes from the Hotel.  Since I am deprived living in Tucson with limited shopping and being a Wardrobe Consultant it was imperative for me to get inspired for  Fall Fashion and what better way than to start at Barney’s. After cruising each floor and delightfully taking it all in I headed up to Fred’s, located in Barneys. Fred’s is a great place to dine alone at the comfy bar and chat with the bartender while enjoying complimentary cut fries with Aioli and sipping on a well deserved Martini with Blue Cheese Olives.photo 1  I continued my indulging with Steak Carpaccio and Arugula Salad.  Back to the hotel on off to bed.

Day 2.
Another perk staying at the Talbot is a complimentary pass to Equinox, which is located 1 block away.  So I started my day with a Restorative Yoga Class, followed by a Mat Pilates Class.  Both great and I learned some new things

Being a Saturday I struggled with the masses on Michigan Ave, so I got off the beaten path and headed to Bella Bacino’s,  a favorite lunch spot I have frequented many times. There was a spot for me at the bar and  I enjoyed wine, a baby baccini 6 inch deep dish pizza made from scratch and salad. 035  It was worth the 30 minute wait in which time it takes to make the pizza.  The Bartender was  generous with refilling my wine.  Why does that happen to me so often?.  I try to be good!

Shopped on Michigan Avenue, the Magnificent Mile, which showcased beautiful fall flower displays on the promenade,  and Street Entertainers pleasing the crowds.008.photo (8)010 I visited  Zara, Saks, Neiman Marcus ,Kate spade, Max Mara, Jimmy Choo, Prada, and  Van Cleef and Arpel. photo (7)photo (6) I splurged and purchased Prada Baroque glasses,Kate Spade reading glasses. Lingerie from Neiman Marcus, and tops from Zara. Love!!!011

Returned to the Hotel for a Power nap before I ventured off to the Chicago Symphony.  I wore a Black satin dress, Vintage brooch, Black opera gloves, Black laser cut out boots from  Stuart Weitzman, J Crew hot pink coat, and  black fur trim.photo (14) I really do love the opportunity to wear fur and I have acquired many fur items from Vintage Stores in the past years.  I would never buy “new” fur.

.
The Symphony Hall was beautiful and I was so excited as I was led to my seat which was a Box seat, OMG what a great view!. The performance was excellent with the highlight being Claude Debussy’s La Mer, one of my favorites.photo (15)

Quick cab back to the hotel and I was off walking to Le Colonial,  Vietnamese Cuisine one block away. The beauty of good location when picking your hotel. The late nite supper was delicious.

Day 3

Art Institute of Chicago. I wore black Zara  stretch pants,  French Connection dark green sparkle top, Talbots grey wool jacket,  and my Franco Sarto olive boots which were quite durable and comfortable throughout the trip.

I am in my world, enough said015

013I attended Media Makeup School in Chicago last year to become a certified makeup artist to enhance my business and Bernadette was also a student there. Bernadette met me at the museum and  we had the best day together.  We took a walking tour thru the museum with our lovely guide Paula .  She was an excellent docent always kept us wanting more!

Below are  some of my favorite paintings and sculptures I saw

017

018157Another reason to travel alone is to indulge in a full day of the museum without someone (my husband) falling asleep on a bench and wants to leave after one exhibit!!!  This was picture was taken our last visit!122Lunch at Terzo, the museum restaurant  with Bernadette was fabulous. We devoured shrimp cakes with lobster hollandaise, and arugula, and washed it down with a beautiful Rose.  Not to mention it was so fun to catch up with my friend from makeup school!

020

Took the public bus back to the  hotel, Starbucks on the  corner, relaxed in my room.

Pump Room.   Best dining experience in Chicago for me   Sunday is dead for diners so it was, perfect for solo woman diner.    Back in the day The Ambassador Hotel was a historic hotel visited by many celebrities and jet sets  who went to have a libation and relax at  the famous Pump Room.

024025Since my last visit to Chicago, The Ambassador was bought out  and it is now the Public Hotel. The  Pump room still exists but has completely transformed. Jean George Vongerichten runs the kitchen now and thank god for that.  My meal was to die for. Roasted fennel w olives and lemon, followed by031 bow tie pasta the size of an actual man’s bow tie with house lamb meatballs.  I  washed it all  down with a luscious Pinot Noir.  The staff was great, cool vibe, no hassles.029  Walked home on rush street window gazing at Chanel, Marc jacobs,037 photo (4)Hermes, and heard the clickity clack of  horse carriages in the street while gentle showers were coming down.  A definite smile inside and out.035

Day 4.

It is cold at 45 vs. high 50,s the previous days so  I got to wear my Canadian fur hat!photo (3)

Rise and shine  Equinox!  Attempted ultimate black dress workout and failed. Too much on my knees. Then headed to the pool to swim laps, and did a water workout with the seniors followed by a Steam Bath. It was fun.

Lunch at Pierrot Gourmet,a cozy spot in  the Peninsula hotel .  With the chill in the air I ordered french onion soup, grilled tuna melt , salad and Rose to balance the appetite.  photo (10) Very good and I refrained from the baked goods in the glass case as I left!

Off to Ikram ,a high end boutique. photo (9)  Interesting items, lots of designer but  to stuffy for me and the racks were packed. I really couldn’t looked if I wanted to.

Back to Zara, to purchase a great blue bag that  looks like Victoria Beckham without the price tag and a cropped black top, my new favorite! The blue bag was big enough for the extra loot I was bringing home.

Headed to the Contemporary Museum of Art store, a friends recommendation and she was right it was cool.photo (11) I bought black flower rings at $5.95 a pop bargain in Chicago.  Back to the  hotel for yet another rest and nap.

A little rest does a power shopper good because i was energized and off to do some damage at Barney’s. A necklace caught my eye two days ago and I decided to go for it.  Very basic I  think I will get a lot of use out of it. I really like it and shopping is what this trip was about!

Fred’s, the last supper! A martini with french fries followed by cavatelli pasta with house made sausage and kale in a garlic broth and parmesan. Delicious!  Fred’s was pretty dead but that was a plus no man repellant needed!

A little window shopping on Oak street and back to the room to pack it all up.

What I took home with me besides my shopping splurges :

More confidence to be on my own

Want to dress better and wear fur as an accessory I am going for it this season, look out Tucson!

Be the stylish person I truly want to be

I cant seem to walk around like I use to because of my knees, and hips, bummer
I love to escape reality!!!!!

1950’s and 1960’s Fashion Illustrations, Nudes, Parisian Scenes from my Husband’s mother an Unknown Artist

What is more exciting than stumbling across something that you love and is now in your possession?  I have done just that.  My husband’s mother passed away recently and as we were cleaning and  organizing her estate I stumbled or should I say fell over with excitement the extraordinary finds in the garage.

076

Helen lived in Paris from 1954- 1965 teaching art, fashion, and falling in love.   She was an artist on her own right and her mediums included oil paintings, pastels, charcoal, and drawings.  I conclude she was prolific at that time and for reasons unknown moved away from her artwork.  The art has been preserved and protected all this time and discovering it all in the garage has been a very exciting project.

I am in interested in selling the artwork, I love the idea of the pieces going to the right home and buyers who will find much enjoyment out of it.   Below is a sampling of Helen Leyrers art in the 1950’s and 1960’s.  If you are interested in a particular piece of art please contact me at Monica@tenoutfits.com

I’m into Leather

One of my favorite quotes in a movie is:  “ I’m into leather” in Woody Allen’s Annie Hall.  I have watched this movie at least 20 times and It makes me laugh every time.  Yes I confess I am into leather too!   The quote in the movie comes early as the young Neurotic Alvy Singer reflects on how his old school classmates turned out.

“I run a profitable dress company”

“ I’m President of the Pinkus Plumbing Company”

“I was a heroin addict now I’m a methadone addict”

“ I’m into leather”

If you haven’t seen this movie I highly recommend it.  It’s a classic and won Best Picture.

I am so into leather this fall that I have been hunting and gathering in a very determined manner.  I was very lucky to find some amazing pieces at Buffalo Exchange, Dillard’s and Zara online.  I decided to indulge myself and have a little fun with my leather purchases by having my husband take some photo’s in the Tucson Desert Wash .

Zara Patent Leather Boots. As with handbags, quality is so important and boots play up a sophisticated side to any outfit with just a tiny hint of edginess.

Perhaps I have inspired you to add a piece or two of leather to your wardrobe. So on that note go thru your magazines and catalogs, get some ideas and visuals and before you know it you might even say out loud  “ I’m into Leather”!
