Ten Tips on Cool Summer Outfits wearing Comfortable Shoes

As  promised, I am following up with a pictorial of outfits with comfortable shoes.  For those just tuning in,  I have been healing and nursing a neuroma on my left foot which has challenged me to up my style game with different outfits based on the shoes.  I love and am use to wearing heels.

Tip 1:  When wearing tennies I think it is advantageous  to wear a little bit shorter ankle jean, I think it looks better and sporty!  I paired my Lucky  jeans  with a  J Crew white tee and  Guess Navy vest.

Tip 2:  Add structure to your outfit to give it a more polished look.  I added a Ann Taylor white jacket.  White Jackets are great to throw on a variety of outfits to give it an instant pick me up!

Tip 3:   For those wanting to keep their outfit evolving, just omit the vest,  and add different jewelry and shoes.  Donald Pliner Kitten heel sandals and very comfortable!

Tip 4:   Watch your hemlines of skirts and dresses.  A little above the knee is  more sporty and flattering for casual cotton dresses.  If you have great legs go SHORTER!!!! J Crew Cotton Dress

SeaVees Canvas Sneakers

On the other hand if you are wearing the ultimate comfortable shoes and don’t necessarily want them the focal point at all, go for a maxi dress- down to the floor hemline!

Tip 5: Accessorize with Statement Jewelry

J Crew Earrings,  Dress purchased at Ross

Tip 6:  Vertical Dressing.  By dressing monochromatic it gives the illusion of a taller you!

Dresses are great for Vertical dressing and so perfect for summer.  This dress is cotton and comfortable. I added a black pair of Donald Pliner Kitten Heel Sandals.

All White!! Tank purchased at the Parker Palm in Palm Springs, White Linen Blend pants at Marshalls

Another example of Vertical Dressing.  Head to Toe all one color.  I added the cardigan and belt for pulling the outfit together.  Black Leggings  J Jill, Zara black shell and cardigan.

Tip 7:  A little peekaboo blouse showing off a pretty bra is a nice distraction!  Also Fancy Shorts can add a Polished look rather than the basic Chino short.  Ann Taylor Loft Shorts, Zara White Blouse, Journelle Black Lace Bra, Clarks Black Slides

A plunge deep V vest  bringing  the eye up with the addition of a pretty hat.  Black Vest- Forever 21, Paige Denim Shorts,  Hat by  Gottex

Anne Klein Cream boat shoes

Tip 8:   Know your colors!  The more you know which colors look best on you the better you will always look!  I paired a  Zara Bright orange sweater with  J Crew White shorts and Leopard Birkenstocks

Sam Edelman Slides

Tip 9:   When wearing ankle straps look for small straps especially if wearing a Midi Dress (below the knee) . The reason is if your straps are bulky and wide they will steal your leg length and look chunky, which means you will look frumpy!! Red Ankle Strap Sandals- DSW, Cutout Dress -Zara

Tip 10:  When wearing white shoes make sure they are clean!!! Scuffed, dirty,  ripped shoes are going to bring your outfit way done in the polished dept!

The “comfortable shoe”  ensembles keep evolving as I do with my comfort level in them.  I will continue to share outfits and tips as the outfits come together!!!  I know to look great ultimately you need to feel great which means taking good care of yourself and accepting what you have and work with it!!!

Palm Springs: The Inside Scoop on a great boutique hotel, Shops, and Sites

The Avalon Hotel:  Two Thumbs Up!!

Formerly the Viceroy,  a  gem conveniently  nestled in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, the historic Avalon Hotel Palm Springs rests at the foot of the rugged San Jacinto Mountains on four acres of fragrant, beautifully manicured gardens. Its Spanish architecture punctuated by a series of secluded, private villas, calls forth the iconic, storied Golden Age of Palm Springs.

This trip was to visit my mother, and I also  wanted to take the opportunity to treat myself and lap up some luxury!  I did just that.

Downtown Palm Springs

Location Location Location is what they always say and the Hotel was walking distance to everything. So convenient!

The action seemed to be on  Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive. The usual shops, restaurants and bars were to be found and of course some always better than others.  I always ask the bartender of my hotel, in this instance my barista and he gave me great suggestions on where to dine, shop and find Mid Century Architecture which was in my two previous blogs

Walking is the best because you will always see  things that get missed when driving. This car stopped me in my tracks!  Citroen, Maserati

White Out

Wearing white is so sexy, fresh, and fashionable.  It is timeless.

Helmut Lang  Knit Sleeveless Tank, Daniel Cremieux  Shorts, Vince Camuto Gunmetal Caged Booties

I remember watching Love Story at least 30 years ago and seeing Ali Macgraw wearing a white tee and white shorts.

love story That visual never left me.  And to this day everytime I see all white in a fashion spread, store or someone on the street I always stop and take notice and admire.

While on my last trip to Boston this display at Nordstroms caught my eye and inspired me

J Crew Spring 2015  Campaign- Fabulous

J Crew Regent Blazer

So can we all wear white ? No matter what shape or size we are?? No!!!

I say no immediately thinking about all my beautiful Autumn Palette clients.  A redhead does not wear white!  It bleaches her out, thus cream is her “white”

Melissa looking so beautiful in a Vintage Cream Cashmere Coat, J Crew Necklace

What I am talking about is warm vs cool in reference to colors that flatter you!

I also say  if you are a body type that is an apple, hourglass, or pear the rule of thumb would be to wear darker colors on the bottom.

Ann Taylor Black Fishnet Skirt, Handcrafted Rubber Tire Necklace, Rebecca Minkoff Snakeskin Heeled Sandals

A few additional tips to remember:

1.  Soccer Thighs or  Voluptuous Derriere- yes you can still wear white but…

Make sure the fabric is heavy and drapes beautifully.   Watch for  pockets that show the seams. That is a no no.   Also a cascading top floating past your vulnerable areas will be flattering and wear some heels!

2.  If you are top heavy rather than bottom heavy wear white on the bottom, darker colors on the top.  This will even you out.

My client getting it right!!!

Enough of the rules, below are some fab pics that are white summer hot!

J Crew —   The added white, neutral accessories make the “look” a homerun!

I pinned this outfit on Pinterest at least a year ago and I continue to see it coming thru the stream.   I am not the only one noticing this amazing outfit!

shorts 17

I presented a “Shorts” workshop last year and this was one of the visuals.  If you don’t like your thigh area then wearing Bermudas will cover up and solve that problem.  By wearing a gorgeous ornate top not only does it distract from the bottom but brings attention up to your face.  This strategy would be a win win.  Dont forget to wear some heels.  If you are screaming at me now for that advice, perhaps a wedge?

A lovely client working it!  We shopped in her closet and we came up with many outfits  This was one of them!

Two thumbs up for rock star attitude and fringe!

Zara 2014.  Love a white suit!!!

Classic, Daring and Edgy– You have to have confidence to pull this off.  Notice the beautiful drape of the pants.
Drape in white pants is so elegant.  Ladies if you are tall  do your self a fashion favor and go get some drapey white pants!

Ladies if you are not tall, go get some ankle pants, heels and you can still rock the white pant suit look!

Ann Taylor Jacket, Brooks Brothers Sleeveless Blouse, Lafayette 148 Pants, Stuart Weitzman Slingbacks

In conclusion wearing white psychologically makes us feel good. White represents cleansing and new beginnings White is innocent and pure . White adds and creates space. Putting on a white blouse feels like being given an opportunity to start the day with a clean slate

I think we can all relate to that vibe from time to time versus are dark friend  “black”.  In months to come  I will address the color black but for now white is right.

Slide in and Get Comfortable Part 1

Slides are a huge trend this Spring/Summer.

Marc Jacobs.   Looking very Dr. Scholls

Sporty, Comfortable and Stylish??? That is the question.  When paired with the right clothes you can pull these shoes off without looking frumpy, but I admit it is tricky fashion.  Ultimately the taller you are the easier this shoe is to look “good”.   This blog is an example of Slides.  Part 2,  I will pair them with clothes that  will compliment  and achieve a cool stylish look for summer.

The  Almighty Birkenstock has returned with Designer labels and price tags on them.BIRCKIES 2

I thought I would check out my own inventory and see if I had any?  Just so happens I do indeed.

Stuart Weitzman:  My favorite shoe designer hands down!  This is my second pair of this exact shoe.  Tortoise Wedge and Black Leather top.

I felt a little surge of relief with this trend because as much as I love my collection of unpractical gorgeous uncomfortable shoes I must admit I do need and want some “comfortable shoes” that I can walk and talk in without showing facial expressions of PAIN!slidesClarks:  These Slides are so sublime!  I think they are quite stylish too!  I am pairing them with A-Line skirts and simple tees.  It works!

Sam Edelman:  Leopard speaks to me always and these Birks copies are really quite fab!  Wait till you see what I do with them next week.

Cole Haan:  Purchased these at Last Chance Nordstroms in Phoenix.  Quite a find and love the rich cognac color.  They will go with everything and so trendy right now!

Adidas:  My Adidas Run DMC – fun song , great documentary on Adidas and the relationship with Run DMC.  Aside from that I have always been a fan of Adidas with my Stan Smiths on the Tennis Court to these Pool Side Slides.  I think they are so hip now I want to incorporate them with my wardrobe.  Lets see what I come up!

Born:  Am I crazy or do these look like something Bottega Veneta would design? Sleek, the classic Basket Weave, two colors that combine beautifully.Perfect wedge, height, and  comfort. Purchased at Dillards.

These are the examples I wanted to share on slides, the “it” shoe of the season.  Stay tuned for my next posting while I stylize these slides  and make them  look Uber cool!

What to Wear, Packing Strategies for a Luxury Getaway Weekend

When anticipating a luxurious spa weekend at The Mission Inn Hotel and Spa in Riverside one must pack with careful thought. Two words:  Relaxed Glamour!073

Bring comfortable clothes but also add a  little exotic,  a little flashy, a little sense of escapism. Accessories can play a huge part to this plan.002

Zara Prada wanna be Sparkly Strappy Flip flops-  These were so fun and worked with so many outfits.

The getaway defines you are in need of an escape, along with relaxation, rejuvenation, and taking good care of yourself.

I always say when you look good you feel good.  The luxury spa wardrobe isn’t so much about image but rather wearing clothes that make you feel good, pretty, and comfortable .   If you know you are going to be surrounded by beauty you want to partake in that beauty also. I did just that as I strategically packed for my luxurious spa weekend.050The airplane outfit is for entering and exiting the getaway.  This Zara Ivory jacket is a soft cotton, so it  won’t wrinkle.  The shoes from Talbot’s are neutral and will have multiple uses, they are also comfortable with the chunk high heel. I plan on wearing this outfit to dinner when I arrive, so the  earrings will be my Glamour Accessory.

My LongChamps Messenger Black Bag has been my go to travel bag for the past 20 years.  I just  replaced my original one and luckily I was able to purchase the same one on ebay. I am set for another 20 years!

I always prepare my own gourmet lunch, I never settle for Airport food unless it is complete desperate measures . My lunch consisted of a grilled radicchio, goat cheese and prosciutto sandwich on Walnut Bread.  As a travel staple I also usually bring fresh fruit and Stuffed dates with Pecans and Manchego Cheese.  Espresso candies are always in my purse.002

The Pool outfit consists of a basic J Crew black bikini with fabulous baubles. I chose black because it is versatile and coordinate with my cover ups and tote very well.

Coverups– I like to bring two

047 Tote for poolside items .  Banana Republic Multi Stripe tote, Kate Spade Sunglasses with 2.5 Reading lens,  Detangler Travel Spray for my frizzy hair, Sublime Spray Oil with SPF 15 (love this product) neutrogena lip balm, Aqua Sphere Goggles, swimcap, reading material . And of course the Iphone!

The Missoni beauty bag is for beauty and hair  products. Since this is a Water related trip I specifically brought Makeup Forever waterproof eyebrow color, and Aqua Eyeshadow sticks along with L’oreal Waterproof Mascara.  Clarins Eau Dynamisante is a fresh clean fragrance that I have enjoyed for years and no one seems to be offended by the scent in a public situation.

Spa outfit:  In addition to my fun flip flops I layered a tissue white tee, with a cami and on the bottom I  wore my Eileen Fisher Brown Cotton Pants.  Comfy!027

The spa was phenomenal, I booked quite a few services and enjoyed every minute of them. The Scalp Massage and Foot Reflexology were to die for.

Exploring outfit: The hotel provided 1.5  walking history tours, and it was marvelous learning about the rich history of the hotel. Two thumbs up! Vince Blue Cotton Boatneck Tee ( protecting my decollete), Ann Taylor Navy Shorts, Multiple Necklace Strands

Dining outfits:  Below is French Connection cotton striped maxi with my favorite  Target Brown belt. Talbots Neutral Heeled Sandals

2nd Dinner outfit: My travel Zara Jeans, Forever 21 Fleur Cami, Old Navy Pink Cotton Cardigan, the Talbot’s shoes again!

I didn’t want to bring my Messenger bag to dinner so I used my super fun Kate Spade Clutch.014

I read a Conde Nast Traveler article in 1992 when the hotel had a grand reopening from being closed for 7 years for restoration and remodeling.

I had always wanted to visit and thanks for livingsocial  offering a special, it reminded me to go!  I ended up not purchasing the livingsocial package because I wanted something better than a standard room,  I  wanted something with architectural aspects.040

The hotel was spectacular, it surpassed my expectations.  Everywear you looked there was something interesting to see.011111  Spiral staircases:  This particular staircase was in my room.

Handcrafted furniture, this particular chair was made for President Taft due to his large frame and he was insulted when asked to sit in it. 120Statues : St Francis of Assisi 116114 And the list goes on. There were even two Macaws named Napoleon and Josephine that greeted all the guests at the entrance. The original owner and wife possessed Macaws with the same name and the tradition lives on.048 There was no stopping Frank Miller the eclectic genius with the vision to create a mission influenced style hotel at the time in 1901 when it was unheard of. 066 High influential friends such as Rockefeller  President Taft, Louis C Tiffany and many others supported the project.022

As times changed, the economy had fallen, the hotel suffered and as a result went into foreclosure in the 70s.  A shuffling of owners tried their stake at managing a grand hotel but it wasn’t until Duane Roberts purchased the hotel and restored the hotel in all its glory from the past adding modern amenities which included a world class spa which his wife manages, Kelly’s Spa.

The pool scene was like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. 045 On Saturday the scene was a  crazy packed party, definitely  W Hotel Vegas vibe.   A  mixed bag of guests from head to toe tattooed men and women, to a 10+ gay men scene sipping daiquiris  and overtaking lounge chairs and tables,  to a bachelorette party,  to a girls spa weekend, screaming children, and  locals enjoying their stay cation.  It was a feast of flesh no doubt. Sunday on the other hand  was spa living.  I guess all the above checked out so it was quite and peaceful. Even the children were quiet! I preferred this vibe to Saturday’s vibe. I even had enough room in the pool to swim laps and read by the pool.

The dining highlight was  sitting in the courtyard on a perfect summer evening. Soaking up the view  looking up and seeing the arches, corridors and cascading bougainvillea .  I ordered crab cakes and a martini and just took my sweet time.  Ahhh125

Saying  goodbye to this amazing place was truly difficult.  I wanted to stay longer  and wasn’t ready to head back to reality just quite yet.    But all good things must come to an end as super shuttle picked me up and the trek home began.

I wore  clothes that presented a confident image because with certainty you never know who your going to meet and sit next to on the plane. Be ready at all times!  036035Turned out a lovely woman joined my isle and  it ended up she was visiting her sister in Tucson who was looking for a personal shopper! Yes!! Help is on the way with Ten Outfits, my business.

The trip started as a spa weekend and ended up as a business write off. Not bad.

Shorts 101

Shorts in my opinion have become more popular over the last year.  We are catching on to dressing them up and showing some leg.

shorts 20

I have embraced wearing shorts this year and I am enjoying them.  Remember FASHION IS FUN!!!!   Do I have some cellulite? YES.  Do I have big thighs?  YES.  Am I over 40 years old?  YES!   If those answers resonate with you I encourage you to give shorts a try and be brave.

I think the key to being successful with your shorts outfit is selecting the right shoes, accessories and tops to create a stylish, pulled together outfit rather than the oldschool way of wearing shorts which is a tee shirt with flat sandals or flip flops – ultra casual.

014 (2)

011 - Copy

Below are tips and rules on wearing Shorts.

Shorts for Full Thighs:  Look for Slim-Cut Bermudas that cover your quads.  Also a lower waist saves you from looking frumpy.

018shorts 3

Shorts for Short Legs:  Go for a 5 inch inseam to play up your legs. Remember you are creating the illusion of a longer leg.  Add a heel or wedge for added height.

shorts 4

DILEMMA:  What if you have short and full legs???  You need to decide what type of shorts ultimately look best on you and what you feel most comfortable in.

Shorts for Long Legs:  Show just the right amount of skin with a mid-length style. Roll-ups balance out lanky slender leg

shorts 11shorts 16

Consider your height

Longer shorts create the impression of shorter legs, while short shorts lengthen the leg, giving the impression of height.  Women of most heights can find stylish and flattering shorts that hit around the mid-thigh.

shorts 5

Consider the fit

Shorts that flare out toward the bottom, rather than hugging the thigh, are flattering for petite girls and curvy women alike, Think Hourglass or Pear Shapes.

Go up a size especially in white

shorts 14

Check the Pockets

Pockets can make or break a pair of shorts. Fewer pockets the better The large pockets on cargo pockets tend to draw attention to your hips and thighs.

Go for Straight cuts, no outdated pleats

Look for shorts that have clean, straight lines. patterns. Dark-colored shorts are also slimming and can look both casual and sophisticated paired with the right shoes.

shorts 7001

Go for Small Prints rather than large Prints. Floral or tropical print shorts can be a fun and flashy addition to your wardrobe, especially in the summer months.

Dressing Up Shorts

1. Try dressy silk crepe or sturdy stretch cotton; avoid flimsy cotton voile and  linen.

2. Think of shorts as you would a skirt.  Feminine blouses, blazers, lightweight sweaters and cardigans

What Shoes do I wear with my shorts?

High Heels
High heels with shorts make legs look longer and leaner. They can also dress up your outfit quickly. However, because the type of heel and the height of the heel can look provocative, make the rest of your outfit a little more conservative.  Suggestions: Basic Pumps,  Heeled Sandals, Brushed Metallic Shoes, and Wedges.

shorts 10

Sandals                                                                                                                       Neutral colors,Light Medium Brown’s, and  metallic’s. The thinner the straps and less of them are best.  Be careful with Gladiators, the higher they go up on your leg, the shorter and stumpier your leg will be.

shoorts 25

Flats                                                                                                                           Flats with shorts can be challenging.  They can make your legs look shorter.  If you are blessed with long legs you can wear whatever you like and will look great.  For the rest of us, nude flats or colors that blend well with skin tones will not cut off your legs and elongate them instead. Also the further down your shoe is cut, the longer your leg will seem.

shorts 22

Boots and Booties                                                                                                 For Fashion Risk Takers!  Easiest in the Fall/ Winter with tights of the same color. Watch for heel height, not to tall.

shorts 24

shorts 23

Tennis Shoes/ Sport Shoes/Teva’s                                                                         Only for Sports, Hiking, Outdoor Adventures, Travelling/Touring in which case it would be a stylish sport shoe.

shorts 21

Flip Flops                                                                                                                  Save for around the house.  Dressy Flip Flops are acceptable, preferably with a wedge to elongate your leg.

Fashion Therapy:     Last I would like to leave you with my personal tips-

How to Get Over your Fear Factor of Wearing Shorts

1.Wear shorts around the house–Baby Steps

2. Exfoliate your skin- Mandatory no matter what!

3. Lotion up- You are doing this already right?

4. Self Tan- My favorite is Nivea Sun Kissed Lotion

5. Color Counts. Tans and Light olive Khaki’s can work against your skin color. Pick     a color that is flattering to your skin tone

6. Strike a Pose. Check your legs out in a mirror and learn the best way of standing     to camouflage your flaws (jiggly thighs, knees)

7. Be confident and realistic- Good Self Esteem never hurts either!

Ferragamo and a Small Party in Italy for Giuseppe Negri da Oleggio, my husband’s Father

Being a  fashionista since I was a child and of course still am, I am always thrilled when a bit of juicy fashion information crosses my path.  Years ago my husband and I were visiting his father, Giuseppe in Switzerland and an incredible story unfolded as we sat around the fireplace in his Villa in Cureglia, a small village outside of Lugano.

.  Giuseppe was explaining to us how he had just finished writing a book on Meditation: Il risveglio del gigante and he was very excited about it because he discovered how powerful Meditation was to his life.

As the conversation continued about his book he casually thru out there that his lifelong friend Ferragamo surprised him with a celebratory Book Release party at his home.   I almost fell on the floor when I heard this and I stumbled with a sentence saying” Salvatore Ferragamo?  The famous shoe designer?” “Yes Monica” Giuseppe said with a big smile.  I just sat there for a moment and collected my thoughts thinking to myself how connected and wealthy Giuseppe was and how there was so much my husband Steve and I didn’t know about him. The relationship between Steve and Giuseppe was distant and the few visits to Lugano only made us want to know more about him.   We will never know because we discovered he tragically died in the Phuket Tsunami years ago.

Since my revelation of Giuseppe personally knowing Ferragamo my awareness for Ferragamo  elevated. ferragamo 1930

I remember when I owned my consignment store, Timeless  in the early 90’s, clients would drop off  Ferragamo’s to re-sell and I always got excited seeing the Ferragamo label, the Gancino hardware and of course the most  famous iconic shoe the Vara, ballet flat which debuted in 1978 . If only I had bought a few pairs for myself, Ferragamo is currently celebrating the 35th birthday of its much coveted Vara pump; the mid-heeled patent ballet-style shoe with a grosgrain bow and metallic disk, favoured by the likes of Alexa Chung and the late Margaret Thatcher.

I am sure you might have a pair hidden in your closet as I found out I did.  The time is now to dust them off and celebrate the revival of a classic.vara

L’Icona, Ferragamo’s exclusive birthday video project that can be seen on UTube offers you the chance to customize a pair of Vara pumps. To celebrate the project L’Icona  ( click to see video) sees 21 of the world’s current trendsetters don a custom pair of Ferragamo’s Vara or Varinas (the Vara’s ballet flat sister with gold plaque).

The project “is an example of how you can create something timeless but personalize it. It’s for the customer who wants to buy it and be able to make a shoe that’s only done for them,” explained director of womens leather products, James Ferragamo . “I think that exclusivity is very important in fashion,” he continued. And if the video of the dancing, petal-throwing ladies isn’t enough to sway you towards spending approximately $400.00 on a unique pair of Varas, Ferragamo’s gooey family history of the shoe might.

To understand a little more about the legendary Ferragamo, below is a brief timeline-

1923: With the success of his Santa Barbara shop, Salvatore Ferragamo opens up the Hollywood Boot Shop in Hollywood.

1927:  Salvatore Ferragamo creates his company in Florence.

1947:  Salvatore Ferragamo wins the “Neiman Marcus Award”, fashion’s Oscar equivalent, with the “Invisible sandal”.

1954:  For the actress Audrey Hepburn, Salvatore Ferragamo creates one of his most famous and iconic styles, a suede ballerina with strap.

ferragamo audrey

1955: One of the very first Ferragamo silk scarves, inspired by Italian symbols.

1966:  Building upon Ferragamo’s extensive relationship with the film industry, the Company creates a velvet ankle boot for the actress Brigitte Bardot.

1975:  The opening of the Ferragamo store on Fifth Avenue, New York, is celebrated and profiled by the prestigious architectural magazine “Domus”.

1978:  Designed by Fiamma Di San Giuliani Ferragamo, the “Vara” becomes the Company’s most iconic and famous shoe, whose success continues to this day.

1996:  Ferragamo shoes are exclusively made for Madonna for her role in Alan Parker’s film, “Evita.”

2011:  Salvatore Ferragamo S.p.A. is listed on the Italian stock exchange, Borsa Italiana S.p.A.

2012 :  Museum Salvatore Ferragamo in Florence pays tribute to timeless Divas . Marilyn adored wearing Salvatore Ferragamo shoes – she owned dozens of pairs, each with a simple design and not one without a stiletto heel.
