Palm Springs: The Inside Scoop on a great boutique hotel, Shops, and Sites

The Avalon Hotel:  Two Thumbs Up!!

Formerly the Viceroy,  a  gem conveniently  nestled in the heart of downtown Palm Springs, the historic Avalon Hotel Palm Springs rests at the foot of the rugged San Jacinto Mountains on four acres of fragrant, beautifully manicured gardens. Its Spanish architecture punctuated by a series of secluded, private villas, calls forth the iconic, storied Golden Age of Palm Springs.

This trip was to visit my mother, and I also  wanted to take the opportunity to treat myself and lap up some luxury!  I did just that.

As tempting as these bikes were to borrow  parked in the front of the hotel, I managed to pick a weekend where temperatures were 110-114.  I passed on the leisurely bike ride.  Next time for sure!!!

I had the good fortune of being upgraded to a bungalow, which I was told by the concierge  were built in 1933.

Interiors  were updated with Hollywood Regency style  by renowned designer Kelly Wearstler.   It was perfect for a fantasy getaway!!!

The property had 3 pools and the pool below was Adult only.  That’s where I ended up.  It was quiet and well shaded with mature trees which made me content!  Lemon Cucumber Water was provided for the guests 24/7.

A little Swank never hurt anyone and this lounge area fit the bill.  By 8pm it was packed with hipsters and the usual suspects!

The property had a Spa and I enjoyed a 90 minute massage.  The complimentary glass of champagne was a nice added touch prior to my Oh feel so good moment!

Downtown Palm Springs

Location Location Location is what they always say and the Hotel was walking distance to everything. So convenient!

The action seemed to be on  Palm Canyon Drive and Indian Canyon Drive. The usual shops, restaurants and bars were to be found and of course some always better than others.  I always ask the bartender of my hotel, in this instance my barista and he gave me great suggestions on where to dine, shop and find Mid Century Architecture which was in my two previous blogs

Walking is the best because you will always see  things that get missed when driving. This car stopped me in my tracks!  Citroen, Maserati

I like Trina Turk designs because they are a little on the wild side, colorful and quite frankly exude fun and style!  You feel good when you’re wearing Trina Turk!

Chic Style with Slides

Slides can look Chic and Stylish!!  I just proved it to myself with my wardrobe and I had my doubts.  It is all about balance and proportion.   After selecting the clothes for these slides my conclusion was slides dictate a Sporty, Classical and Simple look.

Below are a few examples from the slides I blogged about previously and now have the outfits to go with them.

A Sparkly Pump and Reilly’s Craft Pizza

Last weekend I wanted to try a new restaurant and I had heard good things about REILLYs Craft Pizza downtown Tucson.  I also heard it was a funeral home and this intrigued me. As it turns out it this is a true statement and was a funeral home originally that was in operation from 1908-1990.reilly3

The 3,200-square-foot space retains much of the history of the funeral home, from the refinished original wood floors to the salvaged elevator gear repurposed in a glass table. Broken bits of plates and cups recovered from an excavation on the property were incorporated into the “W” and “M” signs on the restrooms; wood from the former chapel and offices was used to adorn a wall in the bar area.

The menu offers modern Italian food in a casual urban setting. Artisan hand-made pizzas, pastas, and salads as well as craft drinks .

jGE3MjGlQsHOwY  Steve and I had a pizza – half ricotta and butternut squash, the other half homemade sausage and pepper.  It was very good and inspired me to start making my artisan pizzas at home again!

The atmosphere had a fun vibe and was energetic- something I was craving that night after standing in high heeled sandals all day working with clients and feeling exhausted.   I was excited to wear a new pair of shoes I had just purchased at Dillard’s which sounds idiotic since I just said how tired I was and to conquer and break in a new pair of shoes?. CRAZY!!!!!!

I normally would agree with you but my new pair of Cole Haan/Nike Air Sparkly Pumps were like walking in slippers.  They were so comfortable I honestly couldn’t believe it myself after standing all day in the sandals.  The added excitement was that I held out since early November when I first saw the shoes at Dillard’s.  The price originally was $186.00 and after a few markdowns  I scored with an additional 30% off paying $70.00 for them. Buillja!!!  I paired them with my white jeans and a black tank.

The shoes made the outfit no question about that and I even got a few compliments at Reilly’s!!

Spring Shoe Splurge!

As I edited my closet recently getting ready for spring,  I realized I was lacking in a few functional pairs of shoes and sandals so I madly surfed Ebay typing in my favorite brands and this is what I came up with:Ten pairs of designer shoes, avg price 30.00. The designers I consistently type in are Cole Haan, Stuart Weitzman, Kate Spade, Joan and David, and for a long shot Christian Louboutin.  My total for Ebay Purchases was $300.00  As I have said before Ebay is for the buyer not the seller these days.  I would also like to say they arrived in a shockingly speedy time. I am set now for Spring and Summer.

To emphasize the spirit of spring in the Desert I displayed my new shoes appropriately.

Scoring Shoes on Ebay

Shopping for shoes on Ebay is one of the easiest ways to go about getting designer shoes at a fabulous price.   All you need to know is what designer you want and your size.  For example my husband loves Tsubo’s ; a sporty mens shoe.  Since he knows he is a 9.5 he just types in Men’s Tsubo’s 9.5 and voila up pops up a stream of at least 15 choices.  He bids on the ones he wants, rarely is there any bidding wars, the auction ends and 2 weeks later he has his shoes delivered to the front door.  Victory!  Also, there are so many auctions that have Buy Now if you agree with the price of the seller you just click the button and you win automatically. Victory!

In today’s Ebay Market I personally believe it is a buyer’s market , not a seller’s market.  There are so many people selling that rarely are there  bidding wars which means the price doesn’t move so you always get a great deal. Some of my favorite designer’s are: Stuart Weitzman, Manolo Blahnik, Jimmy Choo, Vince Camuto, Joan and David, Bally, Giuseppe Zanotti, and  Prada.

One of my lovely clients decided to do some shoe shopping on Ebay.

She particularly loves Cole Haan’s, they fit her foot well and she knows she is always a size 8 when it comes to Cole Haan.

She was looking to build her shoe wardrobe and also replace a pair of booties that her dog Jack decided to eat, chew and destroy. Jack is lucky Melissa has such a forgiving kind heart!

Let’s just say Melissa’s Ebay shopping was a total success and her average price per shoe was $20.00.  She bought 11 pairs.  What a deal!

1.  2 Pairs of Cole Haan Black Booties- Avg Retail Price $250

2.  The Cole Haan Line Up- Avg Retail Price $200-$300

3.  Donald Pliner Line Up- Avg Retail Price $200- $300

4.  Cole Haan, G Series and Naturalizer – Avg Retail Price $100-$250

Good Job Melissa, as I always say “You can never have enough shoes!”
