Personal Branding: Invest in Yourself thru Pictures

This is the age of photos and pictures.   We see them all day and night on Facebook, Instagram, Emails, Blogs, Twitter, etc…  We are hooked to our phones, tablets, laptops, and desktops.  It’s hard to escape the incoming all day long.  ( I am glad I grew up in the 80’s!)

Our photos are our calling card, and a visual image of who we want to be.  We can use pictures to our advantage if taken well.  If we have a bad shot it can actually hurt our image or slow down the path in which we want to succeed.

Whether it is for a Dating Site, Linked In, FB profile, or business profiles photos of yourself need to look great not just good. We have larger audiences with social media .  There is no excuse and if you want to get noticed and stand out,  having a great picture of yourself is a smart tool in your success toolbox.

It is statistically proven we are sized up in 30 seconds based on how we look so let’s learn how to present our best image forward!

I am a stylist, makeup artist and photographer living in Tucson.  The following pictures I took, and styled the “afters”

9 Tips on representing yourself through pictures

Have 3-5 pictures of yourself.   A good picture will help you stand out from the rest of the crowd! This includes a full body shot, face shot, action shot, and professional shot

1A: Full Body Shot                                                                           No bother hiding, you need to be truthful and show yourself from head to toe.

1B: Face Shot – Up close and Personal

1C: Action Shot – No friends, no pets, no children, no exceptions!

2.   Add a Professional Shot to your portfolio.   Friendly and completely pulled together!

3.    Use a photographer who knows how to take a good “casual” picture

4.  Solo Shot:  No one else in the picture

5.  Your Photo must be current, it needs to look like you right now!

6. The right clothes, hair and makeup are essential for a photo to represent you.   This picture does not represent her at all!  The picture also adds 10 years to her.

After makeup application –  WOW Factor!!!

Before Makeup Application

7.  You need to be the center of attention with your picture and pay attention to what is also in the picture.

I would edit the brick wall out, so we see more of her. Too much distraction in this picture.

Nice background  backdrop!  Not to distracting.  We see her first!

Notice the surroundings?? Not good for a photo to represent yourself and your house.

8.  Be Camera Ready wearing a nice outfit, makeup, and a good night’s sleep for bright eyes!

9. Have a Stylist help select your outfits for your photoshoot.  It is worth it!

10. When Smiling don’t overdue it.  Your eyes will appear squinty and closed

Too Squinty!.  Soften your Smile

Project Makeover Winner of the Year 2017 The Pictures you won’t see in Tucson LifeStyle Magazine!

Each year one lucky lady is selected to get a Grand Makeover that will change her life!!!

The Makeover Prize includes:

Ten Outfits Style Evaluation,  Ten Outfits Closet Evaluation,  Ten Outfits Personal Shopping + $700.00 to spend, Bra and foundations to take home with custom fitting , Makeup by artist at Dillard’s , Hair cut and style at Gadabout , Professional photo shoot by Tom Spitz, and an appearance on the  Morning Blend  TV Segment.

Blanca was the winner!!!

Selected as one of the three finalists her winning answer to why she needed this makeover was:

I need help to improve myself and I’m tired.  I don’t have the energy to do it alone.

So let the Project begin!!!

Style Evaluation and Closet Evaluation:

Basically it should be called the “discovery”.  Why?  Because Blanca as well as all my other clients who have braved the Closet Evaluation  discover things about themselves they never have before.022 Blanca saw in her closet who she was many years ago, her current life (mom),  with very boring (mom) clothes, and  the forecast of who she wanted to be !

She forecasted a  mother who was well put together, who had style but still comfortable.  She realized the time she was spending on herself was next to nothing and it showed.

She realized holding on to garments that didn’t  work for her was a disservice to her.030

She also learned the best clothes that compliment her body type (apple).  She learned her assets being her gorgeous legs, skin tone, arms, beautiful face and smile.  She learned  how to accentuate those areas as much as possible and taking the eye away from her challenging areas being her midsection area.037

As we edited her closet , half was tossed because the item was dated, stained and old, did not fit,  and was in the wrong color for her.  Her color palette lends to vibrant rich colors so all pastels and muted tops, sweaters and jackets left the building!022

We also placed her full length mirror in a strategic place so she could actually see herself from head to toe!

By the end of our 2.5 hours she was energized and the transformation had begun! We had created a shopping list of new items that would achieve her style goal of looking like a cool mom and being comfortable at the same time!

Dillard’s Tucson Mall024

Fear Factor shopping! Comments I get before diving into the racks of clothes are ” I’m overwhelmed,  We won’t find anything, nothing will look good on me”.  As insecurities are surfacing I know with all my years of experience successes are on the way!

We found beautiful pieces at Dillards with the $700.00 prize money. 072

Since Blanca is a stay at home mom, and property manager we were looking for casual, fun well fitting clothes. Basically her ” uniform ” to be was a great pair of jeans and leggings for the season and beautiful tops that were steps up from her boring tees.

Here are some outfits we found at Dillard’s

041She was in need of the little black dress! This dress by Theory  is simple and drapes beautifully to conceal her tummy area, along with the turquoise necklaces to draw attention upward around her face.  The  hem length shows off her legs and highlights  her shoes.  These shoes are very Prada-esque!!! Without the prada price

You don’t have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans! You just have to know how to wear them!  In her case the leopard top fits perfectly, skimming the body and concealing her tummy.   The blouse has a v shape at her neckline, which is also flattering.  045

She also needed some new shoes for the wow factor !

As we were shopping for shoes Blanca went right to the 5 inch platforms.  Very impressive!! That doesn’t happen to often with my clients, due to the consistent need to wear flat comfortable shoes.  Taking the elevator up with a high heel is an added plus for petite frame!036

Samantha Ruiz was the talented makeup artist who applied Armani makeup that took Blanca from ordinary to extraordinary!006

Makeup was applied using Artis Brushes, resulting in a flawless natural finish.  Brows filled in,  eye shadows applied, kohl eyeliner to bring out her eyes bronzer to contour her cheeks.  Rosy brown lipstick to show off Blanca’s full luscious lips.

Professional Photo Shoot Day! (The photos that are in  Feb Issue of Tucson LifeStyle Magazine for the story)

To create a beautiful photo many people are involved!  The Executive Editor of Tucson Lifestyle Magazine, Scott Barker, Tom Spitz, Photographer

Artistic Director of Tucson Lifestyle Magazine, Matthew Kaufman

Joseph Boldt, Assistant to Tom Spitz

and myself the Stylist is what is needed to make a great photo. We all collaborate to make it work.  It is a very fun process.  I love it!!

Before the photo shoot, I also need to mention Blanca went to Dillard’s for makeup. Samantha from Dillard’s Armani Cosmetic counter did her magic again, and Gadabout for her hair to be done  prior to  the photo shoot! Megan was the wonderful Hair Stylist from Gadabout.

Blanca had not had her haircut in a year and a half.  She also had a stressful year which resulted in hair loss, and lost the luster too.

Megan gave her a rich conditioning treatment, trimmed, shaped her hair around her face and styled it for the photoshoot !  Blanca was enjoying every minute of it and her hair looked gorgeous in the end!

The location of the shoot was at Highland Park near her house.  This was of great convenience because her entire family was going to be involved with a photo , along with us running back and forth  to her house for wardrobe outfits.

Shot 1:  Being treated like a queen from her family was the first shot!  How fun as they showered her with treats and love! Dillard’s provided the awesome couch that Ted Baker provided Dillard’s  for his clothing line.  I provided the rest of the props.

Blanca is wearing a coral shell  which adds a punch of color. The vest although we can’t see it in the picture adds structure.  It  slims her waistline along with adding a layered look without the bulk because they are both sleeveless.  A cardigan or jacket could be added for continued layering, but the vest is the detail a lot of us would not think to do!

Shot 2    Wow!!!  Blanca is so beautiful here, nothing else needs to be said.

The blouse is so colorful and  extremely flattering on her.  The cognac booties hit perfectly in proportion to where the jean hem ends.  Simple outfit formula: blouse with interesting elements+ great fitting jeans+ cool current shoes+ jewelry = Fabulous Outfit!!!!

Shot 3

This is my cruiser bike that was a prop in the photo shoot and it was a hit, because Tucson Lifestyle used it on the cover of the magazine!  Blanca was having so much fun and she seemed like a natural at modeling!

Want to lose 10 pounds visually?  Vertical dressing!!!  Wearing the same color on the top on bottom, as Blanca is doing here. Add an interesting cardigan, great pair of shoes and jewelry and you’ve got yourself a great outfit!

Me and my bicycle!!!  I was goofing off in between the shots taken.

Blancas transformation was a total success!  Her desire to be open to new ideas, wanting to learn and the willingness to make daily changes are the ingredients needed. She committed to making an investment on herself.    She was absolutely delightful to work with and I think for both of us it was a rich fulfilling experience.

And I am already looking forward to next year for another remarkable transformation!!!

The pictures you won’t see in the June Issue of Tucson Life Style Magazine Buzzing Around Bisbee!

This photo story  was about two girls on a road trip to Bisbee.

Bisbee is a great little getaway only 1.5 hours from Tucson with fun shops, interesting architecture and sites, music, and a cool laid back vibe for enjoying yourself without a lot of expectations.

We started at 6am and didn’t stop till 6pm!  The entire day was great because of the team I was working with!

Scott Barker, Editor of Tucson Lifestyle Magazine102Tom Spitz, Photographer047 Matthew Kauffman , Art Director Tucson Lifestyle Magazine048 Joseph Boldt, Photo Assistant104  The models:  Vanessa Baird, and Paige McGiffen. 079 OUCH!!!054 Bisbee is always a fun visit and the opportunity to do a photo shoot made the day quite an adventure!

The last shoot of the day was at the  Shady Dell Airstream Park.   I couldn’t help but reminisce  when I stayed there 18 years ago when it was $45.00 a night! I was booked in the  Spartan  Airstream004

To prepare for the success of the photo shoot I need to always visualize the outfits that will compliment the different “scenes”.  My job was also to create multiple looks using one base such as the dresses I chose and switch out accessories, add a jacket etc.  They worked out beautifully.IMG_1108 (1) Vintage Luggage that I had as props in my Store in California a zillion years ago!!!074

Flippin excited that Paige wore my Elvis dress!!!

IMG_1107 My instinct as a Stylist is to try on all the outfits the models will be wearing.  If I know it looks good on me I know it will look good on them.  IMG_1102The wardrobe and most props for the shoot were exclusively from my private collection. Having owned a Vintage Consignment Store Timeless in Palo Alto California  I have managed to hold on to quite a collection!FullSizeRender

008It was a great day as I expected.   The shoot ran smoothly and on time which doesn’t always happen.  We started out by the Fairgrounds to do the “car shoot”.  Notice the bangles Paige is wearing !!!099

You gotta love a guy who smiles while shlepping!

090Once the car shoot was completed we all jumped in our cars and caravanned to Bisbee to finish the story.

Behind the Scenes of a Tucson Lifestyle Photo Shoot

Being part of a Photo shoot is very exciting!   And being the Stylist for a Tucson Lifestyle Photo shoot is even more exhilarating!!  March 2016 Issue was just that.  There is so much prep work that is involved prior to the big day I thought I would fill you in on a little of the behind scenes and what it takes to have a great success the day of!

The Wardrobe:

In order to achieve “the look” of what you are forecasting for the shoot you must hunt and gather for the clothes. Two Words: TIME CONSUMING!!!  This task was challenging for me because I was first asked to shop local designers which was few and not particularly “the look” I had conjured up in my mind.  Whats a Stylist to do?  Move to Plan B!!!  Shop Local Boutiques  and add a few of your own personal items as well!!!  Now things were coming into place.  As I worked this process I did enjoy meeting so many interesting people. Laura Tanzer who I had met before gladly provided us with her amazing Palazzo pants, Laura-Tanzer-red-lotus-chiffon-with-high-waist-cotton-striped-pantMoni, Creator  of Cry Baby Couture greeted me at the door with her standard poodle who also greeted me enthusiastically on two legs and two paws on my shoulders!  Moni designed the amazing feather dress!!!IMG_0749

FullSizeRenderShahida Parides provided gorgeous exotic printed jumpsuits and tunics.FullSizeRender (1)  Avenue Boutique also helped out with providing some cute bralettes to go with palazzo pants and cute tops.

The Jewelry:

Roni, creator of Bella Sonoma Jewelry  fascinated me with her beautiful home, art and Limoge collection.FullSizeRender (4)  We are both from the Bay Area  and  seemed to hit if off instantly not to mention shared interests with the love of antiques and art!   I listened and  learned  about her mother who came from nothing in the Mid West  and built a Retail empire.    Her portrait hung above a beautiful antique table as I hand picked jewelry for the shoot. FullSizeRender (3)

There was also an  exquisite chandelier I was drooling over !!!FullSizeRender (5)

Charlene of Bowman and Hock was just what I needed one morning, I just didn’t know it till I met her .  We met in the parking lot of Chase Bank and the trunk of her car opened up as I excitedly was shown her collection that had a Dolci and Gabbana over the top feel. This transaction felt slightly illegal as pieces were pulled out of baggies and displayed on my neck. The mirror was the reflection in the  car window.  I felt somewhat calm and in control until she pulled out the GUN!!    I had to purchase it, because I was in a Gun token mood that morning!    Charlene was vibrant,  funny, enthusiastic and I loved her  jewelry designs. The necklace is the most mind blowing piece I  own. IMG_0902 Your collection really isn’t complete without a  F*** Gun around your neck!  I never get ahead!!! I wasn’t suppose to buy anything for myself.

The Location

Merci Gallery was the  stage to which all beautiful pictures came to life the day of.

The Editor and myself discovered it one day as we were  casually walking down 9th Avenue.  As the small little Merci words popped out on an Industrial building, naturally we were intrigued since after all its TUCSON!!!  Thalissa as we later would build a relationship opened the door and it was a vision of wonderfulness. A wall of green plants, cool furniture,  champagne bottles and art on old brick walls.  This place was COOL!   This was the spot for the Shoot!!!024

The Players

In order to pull off something amazing a lot of talented people need to be in the line up!!! Let’s start with Tom Spitz the photographer. 019 This man has so much positive energy and enthusiasm I look at him in awe and learn. He is so easy to work with not to mention his amazing talent behind the camera.  I was surprised when he asked me my opinion on how things should be set up , looks ect… Okay!!!!!!!

Scott Barker: Executive Editor of Tucson Lifestyle. IMG_0750 Another  very cool guy to work with.  Very laid back and goes with the flow.  Present at the photo shoot  he is a believer in the people that surround him will do what they do best and he trusts them to do just that.  He is the diplomat needed at every shoot and  to keep the flow going and the work at the highest level.  He succeeds!  After the pictures have been selected for the magazine  he will write the story  that goes along with them.

Matthew Kauffman: Art Director of Tucson LifeStyle. A quiet player but very supportive and enthusiastic.  He is very much a part of the success of the end result because he is editing all the pictures and setting it up in the magazine._MG_0884

Studio 110 ( Hair and Makeup)

Vanessa Baird is the girl wonder who is beauty, brains , and overall awesome person!! 004I can thank my web designer Brittney Christie for introducing me to Vanessa when I was asking about Hair Stylists who would come on board for my Makeover of the Year Project 2015.  She is responsible for Jodis hair! ( Posted  Feb 2015)038  Vanessa and I pow wowed prior to the shoot with “looks” where both hair, makeup and wardrobe would come together making each model look amazing.FullSizeRender (7) I was trying on the clothes, texting her and she would respond back with what do you think of this hairstyle to go with….  When she texted me with “What do you think of a Turban”?  I gasped with excitement—- YES!!!!!!!  The turban ended up making the cover!!!006

015So not only did Vanessa and her team create amazing looks that day but Goddess Vanessa also was a model for the shoot!!! I am glad to say I know her now before she becomes famous!032

The Models

Models are scary and intimidating! Or we think they are! Why??? Isn’t it obvious??? They are tall, thin, young, thin, beautful, thin.  Get the picture.  Well the models selected for the day were just what I described above  but also  so nice and approachable.  I got to know each of them, Amber 009and Lauren 031And Thalissa 044Not only were they great to work with but extremely professional!

The Shoot013

This was a very long day!!!!   I started loading up my car at 6am,IMG_0747 and picking up last minute wardrobe items from Avenue Boutique as well as ending my day returning those items  at 6pm .  Patience is required because there is a lot of waiting around in between shots while hair and makeup is being done.   My duties for the day consisted of dressing the models, selecting the accessories, working with Tom, Scott, and Matthew on the vision of the poses and exact location of the shot.   Lunch needed to be ordered  and picked up also!  Ultimately I felt the need to  make sure everyone  involved was comfortable and  relaxed. 027 I also needed to jump in during the shot to make sure bra straps weren’t exposed, collars were in place, hemlines pulled down, jewelry behaving ect…  No dozing!!!! Be alert at all times.

The shoot was a total success in my opinion.  The entire team was in sync and we all worked together with out big egos getting in the way. I have heard it doesn’t go down like this all the time. I guess I got lucky!!

Below is the edited final pictures in the Magazine.  Stay tuned we are heading for Bisbee next for a Road Fashion Trip!!!

How to wear a Checkered Blouse and not look like an Idiot

When a checkered blouse comes to mind you don’t think cool – as in outfit cool. You probably say no way ,  I am going to look like a picnic  tablecloth!  Second thought is the sightings of a checkered blouse either with denim or daisy dukes which we have all seen many times.  This results in a costume look and not stylish.daisy dukes

Currently checkered blouses are a Spring trend .   I personally love button down blouses and I think if paired correctly you too can pull off the checkered blouse.

A few rules to keep in mind.

1. Checkers are the focal point so tone everything else down. Don’t be matchy matchy.

2.All the shoes I selected are neutral.  All the shoes I selected were also edgy and stylish.  NO comfort Merrills in this scenario!!!    Or cowboy boots. NO NO NO!!

3. Don’t go for a relaxed look because you will look like you work on a farm.  Go for tight fitting pants or Straight Skirt or A line Skirt with Heels!

4. Selecting Denim is treading on the dangerous side, because of the stereotypes we all have seen for years.  Pass on it—

Go for a fresh Spring look and below are some examples I hope help!

I am the stylist most of the time, I have also been the make up artist , and my favorite photo shoots are shot at our house.  I like to provide a warm home when everyone comes together- healthy food, and snacks, beverages and espresso.  We all need espresso for these long days- Usually 6-8 hours of shooting.  Let’s also add in 2-3 hours of cleaning the house, and backyard prior to the shoot.   My husband is always kind to help out with all the cleaning and backyard .  I  also spend 2-3 hours pulling clothes and props  from my private collection to create the “look” of the shoot.  I love doing this kind of work, it keeps my creative juices flowing.

Below are some of my favorite photo shoots that were shot at our house .

Antonia Kastilahn:  She was the very first photo shoot I was part of.  Stephanie Lew was the amazing photographer, Khara Williams was the MUA, Mayra Gomez the HairStylist. I was the Stylist .antonia 4

Ten Spring Trends that Tucsonans will Love

This Spring the Fashion Trends include the Good, the Bad and the Ugly!  I was inspired with so many beautiful looks that  I am showcasing the Good, with specific detail to the needs of those who live in the Desert, Tucson Arizona.   I consistently hear the challenges Tucsonans face when approaching their wardrobes with the heat, sweat, and sun to deal with.   My job as a Wardrobe Consultant is to tackle these needs and provide my clients with options and alternatives in which they can maintain a stylish wardrobe, be comfortable and feel great without breaking the bank.  I always suggest Pinterest Inspiration Boards or Binders for which they can use to “see ” a great look and then modify to their own comfort zone.   Below are the “Inspirations of Spring Trends”

1.  Bermuda Shorts:  Classic and Cover the Upper Thigh, in other words no more daisy dukes.

j crew 49.50

2. Black and White: How easy can this be?   Wearing Black and White will always be sharp, chic, and dramatic.  If you have blonde hair go for the white on top, brunettes- try for black on top. Redheads- go for cream on top, black on bottom.

3. Peek a Boo, and  Lingerie by Day    Peek a Boo is a little tease with a sheer blouse, sheer jacket, laser cuts in the clothes.  Thinking of playing it safe?  Think again.

4. Statement Accessories: OMG Look at that!  Prada comes to mind a couple of seasons ago with the Baroque Sunglasses.  I happen to have a knock off pair and they are so fun around the pool!  Not only are sunglasses outrageous, but also handbags, jewelry, and shoes.  Have fun and don’t be afraid to stand out!

5. Stripes:  With Denim= All American, With Navy= Nautical, With Florals= Daring, With White Jeans= Star Power- think Jackie O, or Ali MacGraw.  Keep in mind the size of your stripes and where they are placed on your body!  Never follow a trend if it doesn’t flatter your body type.

6.  Short Suits:  I have always loved a Short Suit,  perfect for Tucson!  Dressed up without the extra fabric to overheat.  How is your relationship with your legs these days?  Variety of Lengths in Shorts gives us all an opportunity to pull this look off, and the more fabulous your shoes are the more fabulous your outfit will look!  Simple tanks and accessories finish the look.

7. Flats and Low Heels (Loud Applause Please!!!!)  When working with clients if we are going to argue it usually has to do with shoes and heel height.  I lean towards a higher heel but this Spring the Gods are not in my favor and low heels and flats are on the catwalk.  J Crew Ballet Flats are not going away EVER!

8.  Ruffles –    When done in moderation I give them two thumbs up!  I particularly like the blouse below because it is framing her face.

9.  Wrap it up!  Diane von Furstenberg is our fearless leader for this trend.  She created the “wrap dress” which is a homerun in terms of fit and flatter to all body types. This Spring check for skirts also.

10. Tie it up-   This trend accentuates the waistline and gives balance to the body and makes you look thinner!!!
