An Afternoon at Bergdorf Goodmans

The way Audrey Hepburn  adores a visit to Tiffany’s is how I  feel about a visit to Bergdorf Goodman’s.

Gazing at the spectacular window displays gives me an immediate  adrenaline rush!

I get so inspired  by what I see, my love for fashion takes hold of me all over again.

Upon the revolving doors I  know sensory overload is upon me . What I  see, touch, hear, smell, and taste will all be wonderful.

I will see beautiful, extravagant, luxurious clothes, purses, and shoes displayed gorgeously.

I will touch exquisite fabrics of silk, cashmere, feathers, and satins.

I will hear music setting the mood. and I will smell bouquets of flowers with the latest perfumes.

I will taste a chilled bubbly champagne as it washes down my  delicious meal!!

My appreciation in experiencing such luxury is so I can understand it and then adopt the look, and style into  what I  can afford.  A luxurious lifestyle can be obtained on a variety of budgets.  This formula has worked for me forever. Knowledge is power!

On this particular visit I  was excited to experience a new pop up shop located on the 4th floor.  Linda’s.

She describes it as a fantasy closet.

As I entered it was a cornucopia oozing with well just about everything of this and that!   It was a little boutique exploding with colorful extravagant merchandise.

If the merchandise was not displayed with perfection it could have misrepresented all the beautiful items that we were to appreciate so much!

Also on the 4 th floor are many couture designers. Chanel, Armani, Oscar de la Renta, Celine and many more.  I enjoyed gently touching  the garments, seeing the cuts, and designs , embellishments, craftsmanship- in other words,  seeing and touching the BEST!

The 7th floor houses home decor and the restaurant Bg.  On previous visits,  I  enjoyed the Collection of Vintage china.  It was mismatched and eclectic very similar to my own collection which I enjoy daily.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated by Kelly Wearstler with simple elegance.  Chinoise birds and fleur wallpaper, white tablecloths, chic water glasses and place settings.

The gentleman waitstaff wore white jackets.   Surrounded by all this beauty it was only proper to order a glass of  crémant d’alsace, les natures  champagne!  I am always in celebration mode at Bergdorfs!  As I looked around I felt as if everyone was happy to be there also!

My lunch consisted of  two first courses:  BG devilled eggs, baby arugula, crispy pancetta, followed by Seared diver scallops, artichoke ricotta ravioli, truffle beurre blanc, shaved truffles,  warm bread and butter and one wrapped chocolate to satisfy my sweet tooth!  It was an expensive lunch but I think it is necessary to treat yourself once in awhile and indulge!

The Shoe Salon was my last eye candy of the day.

Shoe porn is definitely happening at Bergdorfs!

And at the highest  level you can imagine. $$$$$

I lusted as I always do at the beautiful shoes and enjoyed watching the participants in the act of browsing, trying on, and purchasing.  Most amusing on all counts.

On a final note I had the pleasure of sharing this experience  with my wonderful friend Melissa.  It was her first time at Bergdorf’s and I look forward to my, our next visit!!

Ten Tips on Cool Summer Outfits wearing Comfortable Shoes

As  promised, I am following up with a pictorial of outfits with comfortable shoes.  For those just tuning in,  I have been healing and nursing a neuroma on my left foot which has challenged me to up my style game with different outfits based on the shoes.  I love and am use to wearing heels.

Tip 1:  When wearing tennies I think it is advantageous  to wear a little bit shorter ankle jean, I think it looks better and sporty!  I paired my Lucky  jeans  with a  J Crew white tee and  Guess Navy vest.

Tip 2:  Add structure to your outfit to give it a more polished look.  I added a Ann Taylor white jacket.  White Jackets are great to throw on a variety of outfits to give it an instant pick me up!

Tip 3:   For those wanting to keep their outfit evolving, just omit the vest,  and add different jewelry and shoes.  Donald Pliner Kitten heel sandals and very comfortable!

Tip 4:   Watch your hemlines of skirts and dresses.  A little above the knee is  more sporty and flattering for casual cotton dresses.  If you have great legs go SHORTER!!!! J Crew Cotton Dress

On the other hand if you are wearing the ultimate comfortable shoes and don’t necessarily want them the focal point at all, go for a maxi dress- down to the floor hemline!

Tip 6:  Vertical Dressing.  By dressing monochromatic it gives the illusion of a taller you!

Dresses are great for Vertical dressing and so perfect for summer.  This dress is cotton and comfortable. I added a black pair of Donald Pliner Kitten Heel Sandals.

Another example of Vertical Dressing.  Head to Toe all one color.  I added the cardigan and belt for pulling the outfit together.  Black Leggings  J Jill, Zara black shell and cardigan.

Tip 8:   Know your colors!  The more you know which colors look best on you the better you will always look!  I paired a  Zara Bright orange sweater with  J Crew White shorts and Leopard Birkenstocks

Tip 9:   When wearing ankle straps look for small straps especially if wearing a Midi Dress (below the knee) . The reason is if your straps are bulky and wide they will steal your leg length and look chunky, which means you will look frumpy!! Red Ankle Strap Sandals- DSW, Cutout Dress -Zara

Tip 10:  When wearing white shoes make sure they are clean!!! Scuffed, dirty,  ripped shoes are going to bring your outfit way done in the polished dept!

The “comfortable shoe”  ensembles keep evolving as I do with my comfort level in them.  I will continue to share outfits and tips as the outfits come together!!!  I know to look great ultimately you need to feel great which means taking good care of yourself and accepting what you have and work with it!!!

As a Stylist , I have helped countless women find comfortable shoes, heard their ailments and I thought to myself, someday that will be me and that day has come. F**** again!!! This will be temporary!!!!

So what’s the problem??

I have a neuroma on my left foot that is speaking loud and clear to me.  Shooting pain to be exact going thru my 2nd toe and the ball of my foot.  Throughout my life I  have dealt with pain while suffering from heel spurs, bunions, plantar fasciitis, blisters that are bleeding, calluses that excite my pedicurist, and ingrown toenails.  Shall I go back to explaining the early years of discipline in Ballet class???

So on that note you must realize how painful a neuroma is for me to hold up the SURRENDER FLAG!!

AS I am no quitter I made an appt with my podiatrist for a cortisone shot and he said it will help tremendously. He also said neuromas predominately only occur with women due to our shoe choices.

 I also went to GOOD FEET to get arch supports that will shift my gate when I walk and hopefully improve the situation.

It was suggested I bring in a few pairs for proper sizing.

Olivia suggested I buy a Strengthener pair that will help heal the neuroma , and a Maintainer pair that I can wear with a variety of shoes to add some support and comfort.

Olivia was so helpful and I recommend anyone with feet issues to go see her and get some Arch supports.     The store is located in the Crossroads Shopping Center.  4811 E. Grant Rd Suite 127 Tucson , AZ 85712 Local: (520) 327-3163

It has been a 2 weeks and I am praying to the shoe gods they work.   The price per pair was $300.  In the meantime I have been re-working my outfits and trying to re-work the system. I am not use to wearing flats at all.

Fortunately flats are in so I will just have to do my best.  At 5’3 it is just not my first choice.

Style Evaluation and Closet Evaluation:

Basically it should be called the “discovery”.  Why?  Because Blanca as well as all my other clients who have braved the Closet Evaluation  discover things about themselves they never have before. Blanca saw in her closet who she was many years ago, her current life (mom),  with very boring (mom) clothes, and  the forecast of who she wanted to be !

She forecasted a  mother who was well put together, who had style but still comfortable.  She realized the time she was spending on herself was next to nothing and it showed.

She realized holding on to garments that didn’t  work for her was a disservice to her.

She also learned the best clothes that compliment her body type (apple).  She learned her assets being her gorgeous legs, skin tone, arms, beautiful face and smile.  She learned  how to accentuate those areas as much as possible and taking the eye away from her challenging areas being her midsection area.

As we edited her closet , half was tossed because the item was dated, stained and old, did not fit,  and was in the wrong color for her.  Her color palette lends to vibrant rich colors so all pastels and muted tops, sweaters and jackets left the building!

We also placed her full length mirror in a strategic place so she could actually see herself from head to toe!

By the end of our 2.5 hours she was energized and the transformation had begun! We had created a shopping list of new items that would achieve her style goal of looking like a cool mom and being comfortable at the same time!

Fear Factor shopping! Comments I get before diving into the racks of clothes are ” I’m overwhelmed,  We won’t find anything, nothing will look good on me”.  As insecurities are surfacing I know with all my years of experience successes are on the way!

We found beautiful pieces at Dillards with the $700.00 prize money. 

Since Blanca is a stay at home mom, and property manager we were looking for casual, fun well fitting clothes. Basically her ” uniform ” to be was a great pair of jeans and leggings for the season and beautiful tops that were steps up from her boring tees.

Here are some outfits we found at Dillard’s

She was in need of the little black dress! This dress by Theory  is simple and drapes beautifully to conceal her tummy area, along with the turquoise necklaces to draw attention upward around her face.  The  hem length shows off her legs and highlights  her shoes.  These shoes are very Prada-esque!!! Without the prada price

You don’t have to be skinny to wear skinny jeans! You just have to know how to wear them!  In her case the leopard top fits perfectly, skimming the body and concealing her tummy.   The blouse has a v shape at her neckline, which is also flattering. 

She also needed some new shoes for the wow factor !

As we were shopping for shoes Blanca went right to the 5 inch platforms.  Very impressive!! That doesn’t happen to often with my clients, due to the consistent need to wear flat comfortable shoes.  Taking the elevator up with a high heel is an added plus for petite frame!

Makeup

Samantha Ruiz was the talented makeup artist who applied Armani makeup that took Blanca from ordinary to extraordinary!

Makeup was applied using Artis Brushes, resulting in a flawless natural finish.  Brows filled in,  eye shadows applied, kohl eyeliner to bring out her eyes bronzer to contour her cheeks.  Rosy brown lipstick to show off Blanca’s full luscious lips.

and myself the Stylist is what is needed to make a great photo. We all collaborate to make it work.  It is a very fun process.  I love it!!

Before the photo shoot, I also need to mention Blanca went to Dillard’s for makeup. Samantha from Dillard’s Armani Cosmetic counter did her magic again, and Gadabout for her hair to be done  prior to  the photo shoot! Megan was the wonderful Hair Stylist from Gadabout.

Blanca had not had her haircut in a year and a half.  She also had a stressful year which resulted in hair loss, and lost the luster too.

Megan gave her a rich conditioning treatment, trimmed, shaped her hair around her face and styled it for the photoshoot !  Blanca was enjoying every minute of it and her hair looked gorgeous in the end!

The location of the shoot was at Highland Park near her house.  This was of great convenience because her entire family was going to be involved with a photo , along with us running back and forth  to her house for wardrobe outfits.

Shot 1:  Being treated like a queen from her family was the first shot!  How fun as they showered her with treats and love! Dillard’s provided the awesome couch that Ted Baker provided Dillard’s  for his clothing line.  I provided the rest of the props.

Blanca is wearing a coral shell  which adds a punch of color. The vest although we can’t see it in the picture adds structure.  It  slims her waistline along with adding a layered look without the bulk because they are both sleeveless.  A cardigan or jacket could be added for continued layering, but the vest is the detail a lot of us would not think to do!

The blouse is so colorful and  extremely flattering on her.  The cognac booties hit perfectly in proportion to where the jean hem ends.  Simple outfit formula: blouse with interesting elements+ great fitting jeans+ cool current shoes+ jewelry = Fabulous Outfit!!!!

This is my cruiser bike that was a prop in the photo shoot and it was a hit, because Tucson Lifestyle used it on the cover of the magazine!  Blanca was having so much fun and she seemed like a natural at modeling!

Want to lose 10 pounds visually?  Vertical dressing!!!  Wearing the same color on the top on bottom, as Blanca is doing here. Add an interesting cardigan, great pair of shoes and jewelry and you’ve got yourself a great outfit!

The pictures you won’t see in the June Issue of Tucson Life Style Magazine Buzzing Around Bisbee!

This photo story  was about two girls on a road trip to Bisbee.

Bisbee is a great little getaway only 1.5 hours from Tucson with fun shops, interesting architecture and sites, music, and a cool laid back vibe for enjoying yourself without a lot of expectations.  

We started at 6am and didn’t stop till 6pm!  The entire day was great because of the team I was working with!

The last shoot of the day was at the  Shady Dell Airstream Park.   I couldn’t help but reminisce  when I stayed there 18 years ago when it was $45.00 a night! I was booked in the  Spartan  Airstream

To prepare for the success of the photo shoot I need to always visualize the outfits that will compliment the different “scenes”.  My job was also to create multiple looks using one base such as the dresses I chose and switch out accessories, add a jacket etc.  They worked out beautifully. Vintage Luggage that I had as props in my Store in California a zillion years ago!!!

 My instinct as a Stylist is to try on all the outfits the models will be wearing.  If I know it looks good on me I know it will look good on them.  The wardrobe and most props for the shoot were exclusively from my private collection. Having owned a Vintage Consignment Store Timeless in Palo Alto California  I have managed to hold on to quite a collection!

It was a great day as I expected.   The shoot ran smoothly and on time which doesn’t always happen.  We started out by the Fairgrounds to do the “car shoot”.  Notice the bangles Paige is wearing !!!

Once the car shoot was completed we all jumped in our cars and caravanned to Bisbee to finish the story.

White Out

Wearing white is so sexy, fresh, and fashionable.  It is timeless.

 I remember watching Love Story at least 30 years ago and seeing Ali Macgraw wearing a white tee and white shorts.

 That visual never left me.  And to this day everytime I see all white in a fashion spread, store or someone on the street I always stop and take notice and admire.

While on my last trip to Boston this display at Nordstroms caught my eye and inspired me

So can we all wear white ? No matter what shape or size we are?? No!!!

I say no immediately thinking about all my beautiful Autumn Palette clients.  A redhead does not wear white!  It bleaches her out, thus cream is her “white”

  What I am talking about is warm vs cool in reference to colors that flatter you!

 I also say  if you are a body type that is an apple, hourglass, or pear the rule of thumb would be to wear darker colors on the bottom.

A few additional tips to remember:

1.  Soccer Thighs or  Voluptuous Derriere- yes you can still wear white but…

Make sure the fabric is heavy and drapes beautifully.   Watch for  pockets that show the seams.That is a no no.   Also a cascading top floating past your vulnerable areas will be flattering and wear some heels!

2.  If you are top heavy rather than bottom heavy wear white on the bottom, darker colors on the top.  This will even you out.

I pinned this outfit on Pinterest at least a year ago and I continue to see it coming thru the stream.   I am not the only one noticing this amazing outfit!

I presented a “Shorts” workshop last year and this was one of the visuals.  If you don’t like your thigh area then wearing Bermudas will cover up and solve that problem.  By wearing a gorgeous ornate top not only does it distract from the bottom but brings attention up to your face.  This strategy would be a win win.  Dont forget to wear some heels.  If you are screaming at me now for that advice, perhaps a wedge?

 Drape in white pants is so elegant.  Ladies if you are tall  do your self a fashion favor and go get some drapey white pants!

In conclusion wearing white psychologically makes us feel good. White represents cleansing and new beginnings White is innocent and pure . White adds and creates space. Putting on a white blouse feels like being given an opportunity to start the day with a clean slate

I think we can all relate to that vibe from time to time versus are dark friend  “black”.  In months to come  I will address the color black but for now white is right.

Spinning is good for you!

I love to Spin! I don’t mean on the tea cups in Disneyland, or twirling on the dance floor or that feeling before you lose your cookies. I am talking about spinning on a stationary bike with resistance simulating riding a bike outdoors.

 The perks : You can’t get run over by a car, you won’t get a flat tire and you won’t be subjected by the outdoor elements such as a bee swarm, swallowing a bee, and finally not having to wear your biking “costume” and look like an alien bee! Thus my bike is “out of order” at the moment for those reasons!

I have been Spinning for over 11 years and to this day I tell my class I still love it and can’t imagine life without it.  It is so crazy fun, totally intense and  last but not least a detox sweat fest!I have been an instructor for 8 years and the best part is I get to be the DJ! I believe the art of a good playlist is to have lots of rhythm, drum beats to synchronize your pedal strokes, and  lyrics you can sing too If the mood strikes you.  I like soulful melodies you can feel, aggressive rock, classic rock, alternative,  80’s  and a little humor never hurt either as Stand Up comedy has entered the building.  I enjoy all genres of music and I choreograph a class based on climbing hills, jumping, sprinting.

One of the most enjoyable classes I ever taught was at LA Fitness 5 years ago.  It was New Years Eve morning and I had a Party PlayList that was off the charts!  I also provided party hats and noisemakers.

One of the best parts of a spin class is developing friendships.  I have so many wonderful friends because of spinning.  I think to myself if it wasn’t for this class I would of never met them . What a gift! Thank you Mike for toweling me off!
So many delightful students have joined me for an intense hour and thoroughly enjoyed themselves

So let’s talk about shoes!

Cycling shoes are needed to clip in and get that simulation I was talking about with a road bike.  I have gotten my moneys worth on my first pair of Spinning shoes I purchased  12 years ago.  My replacements are Moon Platinum Silver Sidi’s and was referenced in class as “My little Air Streamers! I am loyal to Sidi but there are a lot of good shoes to choose from.

  So many people come up to me and say spinning looks intimidating, really hard; I think I would have a heart attack!  Nonsense!  I have had 88 year olds in class as well as ten year olds. If they can do it so can you!  Also it is gentle on the body and great exercise if your limited because of knee issues, ect.

So on a final note I encourage you to give Spinning a try. You might like/love it!  I also want to thank all of the people who have taken my classes and supported me thru the years, we really have had a blast!   I plan on continuing for years to come!!!
